General Surgery in Birmingham, AL That Puts Your Recovery First

Surgery used to mean big incisions, long hospital stays, and recoveries that stretched on for months. Minimally invasive techniques have changed all of that, and at BMI, those techniques aren’t a specialty offering. They’re the standard. Dr. Long is a board-certified general surgeon with two decades of experience performing laparoscopic procedures across a wide range of conditions.

No matter what brings you in, you’ll find a team that takes your situation seriously, explains your options, and builds a treatment plan around your specific needs. If you’ve been told you need surgery, or if you’re trying to figure out what to do about a diagnosis, this is a great place to start.

Conditions We Treat Using Minimally Invasive Surgical Procedures

General surgery covers a lot of ground, and so do we. The conditions listed below represent the range of diagnoses we treat regularly at BMI Surgery, all performed using minimally invasive techniques that prioritize precision, safety, and getting you back to normal life as quickly as possible.

Appendicitis

Appendicitis moves fast and needs to be treated the same way. We perform a laparoscopic appendectomy that gets you out of pain and back home with minimal disruption to your life.

Breast Conditions

Breast conditions vary widely in severity, but all of them deserve proper surgical evaluation. Dr. Long performs sentinel lymph node biopsy of breast tumors and treats a range of breast-related concerns.

Cancer

We offer laparoscopic surgery for colon cancer, rectal cancer, and large bowel and small bowel tumors, bringing precision and experience to every procedure as part of a coordinated approach to care.

Gallbladder Disease

Gallbladder disease is one of the most common reasons patients come to us, and one of the most treatable. We perform laparoscopic gallbladder surgery and laparoscopic common bile duct exploration.

Endocrine

Thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal conditions can all be corrected through parathyroidectomy and laparoscopic adrenalectomy, both of which are offered here at BMI.

Esophagitis

Esophageal inflammation can lead to serious complications if left untreated. When conservative treatment isn’t enough, we perform laparoscopic fundoplication for GERD, Heller Myotomy for achalasia, and repair of large hiatal and paraesophageal hernias.

Gallstones

Gallstones are common, and so is the relief patients feel after having them treated. Laparoscopic gallbladder surgery is straightforward, and most patients recover quickly with little downtime.

Hemorrhoids

If you’ve been managing hemorrhoid symptoms without real relief, surgery is often the most direct path to resolving the problem. We perform stapled hemorrhoidopexy, a minimally invasive approach that’s more manageable than most patients expect.

Hernias

Hernias don’t resolve on their own, but they do respond well to surgical repair. Dr. Long performs laparoscopic inguinal, femoral, umbilical, ventral, and paraesophageal hernia repair.

Acid Reflux

Chronic acid reflux that isn’t responding to medication is often a structural problem — and surgery addresses it at the source. Laparoscopic fundoplication for GERD and repair of large hiatal hernias are proven procedures that offer lasting relief.

Birmingham Patients Choose BMI for General Surgery Every Time

See why patients travel from across the Southeast to be treated here.

Choosing a surgeon for a general surgery procedure isn’t a decision to make lightly. Here’s what sets us apart for patients across Birmingham and the Southeast.

Minimally Invasive as the Standard

The minimally invasive technique isn’t an option we offer; it’s the way we operate. Smaller incisions, less pain, lower infection risk, and faster recovery times are the baseline expectation for every patient who walks through our doors.

Board-Certified Surgeon

Dr. Jay Long is board-certified in general surgery and completed a dedicated fellowship in minimally invasive surgery at one of the country’s top training programs. That level of specialized training means you’re getting a surgeon who has focused his entire career on doing exactly what you need done, and doing it well.

Outpatient Surgery When Possible

Most of our general surgery procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, meaning you go home the same day. No unnecessary hospital stays, no extended recovery in an unfamiliar environment, just well-executed care.

Who’s Actually Operating on You Matters

Meet the surgeon behind your general surgery appointment.

Dr. Jay Long built BMI Surgery in 2006 with a specific vision: a practice focused entirely on minimally invasive techniques, where patients get better outcomes and faster recoveries.

His training reflects that commitment. A graduate of the University of Alabama School of Medicine, Dr. Long completed his general surgery residency at Baptist Medical Center in Birmingham, earning the Hugh Linder Award as outstanding Chief Resident. He’s board-certified in General Surgery with a 97th percentile score on the certifying examination and nearly two decades of procedures behind him.

Initial Weight: 374 lbs
Current Weight: 188 lbs
Matt Lost 186 lbs!

“Having this surgery has completely changed my life. I started at 374 lbs, and now I have lost down to 188lbs. I had gained so much weight and was in so much pain that I had considered taking my life. I was completely miserable. I was at my back doctor, and he was telling me about the back surgery I needed due to having 30+ blocks that no longer worked. Him and I are the same age, and he begged me to consider weight loss surgery. I asked around, and I was referred to Dr. Long… I am now in the best shape I have ever been in. I am able to take my kids hiking and swimming. I can do anything and everything my kids can do too! I can keep up with them all day, and usually, I am the last one standing.”
